Cheap Prom Limos: A Big No No

Cheap Prom LimoAdmit it – you have a fixed income for your prom limo and you’ve been actively searching out a cheap limo service for your big night.

Stop – there’s an old adage: You get what you pay for – and it couldn’t be more true than in the case of special event transportation.

Why The Lower Prices?

Typically:  Older vehicles, improperly (or not) registered businesses, under/not insured, diminished standards and untrained employees.

Repercussions:  The limo never shows, a smaller-than-promised vehicle appears (perhaps you were promised an 8 passenger limousine and a 6 passenger version arrives for pick-up), the lack of maintenance is apparent (ripped rugs, tired/worn interior, sound system is shot, etc) and the list goes on.

What to do?

Work with a local company with a solid reputation.  The internet, while a great place to search out limo services is merely a hangout for unethical and fly-by-night operations.  Rembember, you are interested in service and value – not just price.  Sure, scoring a limo for $300 sounds like a great deal…Until the car doesn’t appear and you are left stranded on prom night.

Be a smart and savvy consumer – cheap limos are simply not the way to go! Good luck!

Up Up and Away: NY Tolls

Toll IncreasesNY tolls are on the rise AGAIN.  Effective March 3rd at 2 am, the MTA is once again raising tolls on many area crossings.

Among those included:

The Bronx-Whitestone, Throgs Neck & RFK Bridges as well as the Hugh L. Carey & Queens Midtown Tunnels where prices will increase to $7.50 one-way up from the current charge of $6.50.

For the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, look for a new rate of $15.00 (which reflects a round-trip fare paid upon crossing into Staten Island).

Those traversing the Henry Hudson Bridge will see a new toll rate of $5.00 (up from $4.00 per crossing).

Hummer Limos in Connect: Illegal!

Hummer LimoFact:  Hummer limos* are illegal (unable to be registered) in Connecticut (as well as many other SUV-style limousines)

Reality:  There are unscrupulous limo companies in the world that will lead you to believe they are:

  1. Operating legally in Connecticut and offer said SUV limos
    • Fact:  Just because they have a 203 or 860 number does not mean they are operating a legitimate business in CT (most are usually in New York, New Jersey or Massachusetts)
  2. A valid CT limo company
    • Want to know the truth? Ask for their CT livery permit number.  Remember, just because they have what appears to be a street address in state does not mean they are really there (many use mailboxes to appear legitimate).
  3. Able to book and service reservation requests

Why the Law?  While we cannot speak to why the law is on the books – the bottom line is that it is a reality and should not be circumvented or disregarded.

Why do some limo companies mislead consumers?

      • They know you want a specialty limo and hope you are unfamiliar with the law
      • They want to make money
      • They don’t care about the law (as they are registered out of state)

Be Wary Of:

Online booking services – they do not always verify the existence of vehicles, condition or enforce adherence to local laws.  Your best bet is to book directly with a local limousine company.  Why?  You can go see the actual vehicle and make sure it meets your needs.  Consider using online booking services simply to make a list of prospective companies and then call around for quotes.

Lastly, remember, there are consequences for decisions…Sadly; with every year that passes we hear more stories about limos not appearing for special events (mostly proms, occasionally weddings).  These limousine services are taking deposits and not appearing when they hear about onsite inspectors.  Don’t be a statistic – book the right vehicle and you should have no problems.

*Exception: If your itinerary will take you out of Connecticut, you are able to reserve and use a Hummer limo.

Have questions?  Leave a comment or give us a call – we are happy to help you get in the right vehicle!

Ways to Reward Employees & Support Small Business

Shop SmallAre you a business owner looking for fun and creative ways to thank your employees for all their hard work?  Sure, time off and bonuses are always appreciated – but sometimes it’s the extra little things you do for your employees – without being asked, that can have the most profound effect.

Consider establishing an employee discount program.  Yes, there are national programs available – and they’ll take care of everything for you.  However, are they giving you and your employees access to the local businesses you frequent on a daily basis?  Probably not…Now don’t get us wrong, as one of our readers pointed out a few weeks back – there absolutely is a place for big box retailers right alongside the small businesses lining Main Street. In fact, we think an optimal program brings together a mix of large and small business partnerships.

Tips for Establishing an Employee Discount Program:

Start in your community by seeing if any local merchants, stores, vendors or services offer programs.  If so, get your company on the list of participants.

If you come up short, make a targeted list and send a few emails or make some calls.  You would be amazed how often we find local businesses that want active partnerships with other small businesses.

Don’t be afraid to ask some of the bigger businesses in town too – if there is an interest, they may offer something to help support local community businesses.

Ask your employees what types of services would be most useful to them – sometimes it is merely the access factor – not a discount – that lends benefit.  Let’s be honest, as business owners – we should be networking frequently and leveraging these relationships (to continue the conversation – and most importantly to support our collective business endeavors) – passing them along to employees is a win for everyone.

Now – Get to work!  If you are in need of a Connecticut limo partner, we would be happy to discuss tailoring services to meet your employees’ needs (whether for personal or business travel).

Pink Prom Limos? A Matter of Preference

CT Limo ServiceFunny enough – come February each year, at Absolute Transportation, we often feel like we are reliving our high school years.  Why?  Because we spend countless hours daily reading about prom limos, limousine service to proms and answering requests for service to any number of Connecticut proms.

Many of the requests are problematic – as the service simply can’t be provided:

Caller wants a Hummer or SUV style limousine and we spend the call educating the prospective customer on Connecticut limo laws.

For others – the requests are for out-of-the-box service ideas (exotic limos, trolleys, fire engine limos, armored limousines and the like).

However, the one that we see rising to the top this year is the request for pink limousines.  Apparently black, white and silver limos are out (at least with this year’s class of prom goers).

Are pink limos available in Connecticut?  Possibly – we’re not entirely sure (what we can tell you is that we do NOT have one – sorry folks – not enough business demand to support the request outside of prom season).

What do we think about these brightly colored forms of transportation?  It’s a matter of personal preference.  Truthfully – prom is one of those events that you will look back at pictures for years to come.  If you think now that the sight of your group of best friends, in front of an oversized hot pink vehicle is appealing – by all means, if you can find one, go for it.  Make sure everyone in the group is on board – they will be their memories too.

Lastly, please remember our standard warning:  whatever you end up booking – make sure it is legal in Connecticut.

Ways to Get Home in a Snow Storm

Alternative TransportationCurrent weather have you stranded somewhere other than home?

Wondering how you can reach home with the number of flight cancellations already estimated to be north of 4,000? Here are some time-tested ways to get home without flying directly into your originally scheduled destination.

1. If you are outside of the impacted area looking to get home – change your ticket to come into an airport that is closer, but not currently closed. (Example, flying into any of the Washington DC airports – if you are on the West Coast, would put you in a position to take a train or car home once the rails and/or roads clear).

2. Consider the train – yes, it may take longer – but compared to waiting for a rebooked flight – this may be faster.

3. Rental Cars: If you are stranded at an airport, and within driving distance, consider renting a car to get home. You will obviously need to wait for the roads to clear in New England. Finding all the cars at the airports booked? Remember, many rental companies have “neighborhood” locations – you might be able to find a vehicle there.

4. Hire a limo/car service to get you home. Truth be told, as soon as the roads reopen, this is probably the fastest way to reach your destination (as you’ll likely find more availability than with mass transit). Additionally, there is no need to look to return the vehicle (as with a rental car). (Reservations can be made here if you need limo service in CT.

5. Bus service – may be an option – again, this all depends on your current location.

Alternatively, if you are currently stuck in New England or the Metro New York area looking to get out…Sit tight and consider any of the above methods of transportation once normal service resumes.

We understand that travel disruptions can be frustrating. If you have a willingness to think creatively and invest a bit of time/effort, getting to your final destination, in a timely manner, may be a bit easier than you think. Good luck and stay safe!
