How to Get From Connecticut to the NYC Cruise Port: Manhattan, Brooklyn & Cape Liberty
Short answer: From Connecticut, the easiest way to reach a New York-area cruise port with luggage is a private car service booked to your ship's check-in window. Most cruises from the region sail from one of three terminals: the Manhattan Cruise Terminal on the West Side, the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook, and Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, New Jersey. Find your terminal and check-in time on your cruise documents first, then book the ride around that time, not the sailing time. Absolute Transportation drives Connecticut passengers to all three terminals on request, door to curb, 24/7. Call (203) 938-0000 or see our Connecticut to Manhattan car service.
Which cruise terminal is my ship leaving from?
Your cruise line's booking documents name the terminal. The three you'll most likely see from Connecticut:
| Terminal | Where | Vehicle entrance (official) |
|---|---|---|
| Manhattan Cruise Terminal | 711 12th Avenue, New York, NY (Hudson River piers) | All cars enter from the north at West 55th Street and 12th Avenue |
| Brooklyn Cruise Terminal | 210 Clinton Wharf, Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY | All cars enter at Bowne Street and Imlay Street |
| Cape Liberty Cruise Port | 4 Port Terminal Boulevard, Bayonne, NJ | Through the guard gate at Port Terminal Boulevard, then follow signs |
Addresses and entrances come from NYCEDC, which runs the two New York City terminals, and from Royal Caribbean's Cape Liberty directions. Two lines can share a terminal on the same day, so always confirm the pier on your boarding pass.
What time should I get to the cruise terminal?
Use the check-in or arrival window your cruise line gives you. That's the time that matters, not departure time. NYCEDC says ships usually dock between about 7 and 8 AM and boarding generally begins between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM, depending on the ship. Arriving earlier than your assigned window usually means waiting outside the terminal.
Work backward from your window:
- Your check-in window (from your cruise documents)
- Minus the drive from your town to that terminal, with room for I-95, Bronx, and bridge or tunnel traffic
- Minus a buffer for weekend congestion, holiday sailings, and the line of cars at the terminal entrance
From New Haven County, Manhattan and Brooklyn mean crossing the Bronx and into the city, and Cape Liberty means getting across the Hudson into New Jersey as well. Your dispatcher will suggest a pickup time when you book.
Why use a car service instead of driving and parking?
- Luggage. A week of cruise bags doesn't fit easily on a train and a subway. A chauffeur loads the bags at your door and unloads them at the terminal curb.
- No parking to manage. You skip the terminal parking garage and the drive home after the cruise.
- Groups and families. One vehicle can carry the whole party and all the bags, so nobody is juggling trains.
- Tolls are part of the quote. Absolute includes tolls in the quote, so the bridges and tunnels on the way aren't a surprise.
Public transit does reach all three terminals, and NYCEDC encourages it for people traveling light. It gets harder with big suitcases, kids, or anyone who has trouble with stairs.
Which vehicle should I book for a cruise transfer?
Choose by the number of passengers and the number of bags, not seats alone. On the site, Absolute lists:
| Vehicle | Passengers (site-stated) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Lincoln sedan or crossover | up to 4 | A couple or small family with moderate luggage |
| Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Suburban, or similar SUV | up to 6 | Families with large cruise suitcases |
| Mercedes-Benz or Ford Sprinter van | up to 13–14 | Groups, multi-family sailings, and lots of bags |
Seat count isn't luggage space. When you book, tell us how many people, how many large bags, how many carry-ons, and about anything bulky like a stroller or a mobility aid, so we can send the right vehicle.
How do pickups work when the ship comes back?
On return day, ships dock early and passengers leave as their group is cleared. NYCEDC notes that many people who parked at the terminal are off the property by about 10 to 10:30 AM. When you book your return:
- Give us your ship name, terminal, and return date.
- Tell us whether you plan to walk off with your own bags (often earlier) or wait for checked luggage.
- Keep your phone on when you leave the ship. Your chauffeur meets you at the passenger pickup area for that terminal.
What should I have ready when I book?
- Cruise line, ship, terminal, and sailing date
- Check-in window from your cruise documents
- Pickup address in Connecticut (or a second stop to collect family members)
- Number of passengers and bags
- Return date and expected disembarkation time
