JFK vs LaGuardia vs Newark from Connecticut: Which NYC Airport Should You Fly From?

Short answer: From New Haven County, LaGuardia (LGA) is usually the easiest New York airport for domestic trips. It is the closest by road (about 73 miles from New Haven), but a Port Authority rule limits most of its nonstop flights to about 1,500 miles. JFK is the better pick for most international and long-haul flights. Newark (EWR) is the farthest (about 93 miles, across the Hudson in New Jersey), but it's United's New York hub and sometimes has the nonstop or schedule the other two don't. Pick the airport with the right flight first, then plan the ride. How far is each New York airport from New Haven?

Yale's travel office publishes one-way road mileage from New Haven:

Airport Where Road miles from New Haven
LaGuardia (LGA) Queens, NY about 73
JFK International (JFK) Jamaica, Queens, NY about 80
Newark Liberty (EWR) Newark, NJ about 93

Miles are only half the story. LaGuardia and JFK are reached by crossing into Queens over the Whitestone or Throgs Neck Bridge, while Newark means getting across the Hudson as well, so bridge and Bronx traffic decide how long the ride really takes. On a weekday morning the "closest" airport isn't always the quickest.

When is LaGuardia the right choice?

  • Domestic trips within about 1,500 miles. The Port Authority's perimeter rule bars most nonstop flights from LaGuardia beyond 1,500 miles, with exceptions for Denver and Saturdays. That covers the East Coast, Florida, the Midwest and much of Canada.
  • Short business trips where a shorter ride matters most.
  • Check your terminal. Flights currently use Terminal B and Terminal C (Delta). Terminal A, the historic Marine Air Terminal, has no scheduled commercial flights right now, so confirm the terminal on your airline booking before you leave.

If you're flying to the West Coast, the Mountain West (other than Denver) or overseas, LaGuardia usually means a connection.

When is JFK the right choice?

  • International flights. JFK is the largest airport in the New York area and the main gateway for overseas travel.
  • Long nonstops to the West Coast and beyond.
  • Plan extra time. Yale's travel office warns that JFK's volume and immigration lines can slow you down at peak times, especially at the start of holidays.

Coming home to Connecticut after an international arrival, give us your flight number. We track the flight and plan the pickup around when you actually land, not the scheduled time.

When does Newark make sense from Connecticut?

  • United flights and United connections, since Newark is United's New York hub.
  • A nonstop or departure time you can't find at JFK or LaGuardia.
  • Rail is an option. Amtrak runs between New Haven's Union Station and the Newark Liberty Airport station, where AirTrain Newark connects to the terminals. That works well for a solo traveler with light bags; a car is easier for families, groups, heavy luggage or a very early departure before the trains run.

Because Newark is the longest ride, leave a bigger traffic cushion and tell us your flight time when you book so we can suggest a pickup time.

Quick decision guide

Your trip Usually best from CT Why
Domestic, under about 1,500 miles LaGuardia Closest by road; perimeter rule keeps it domestic-focused
International or long-haul nonstop JFK Largest NY gateway, no perimeter limit
United flight or a schedule only EWR has Newark United hub; farther, so allow more time
Short domestic trip, Avelo or Breeze route Tweed New Haven (HVN) Minutes from New Haven if your route is served
Hartford-area or wants to skip NYC traffic Bradley (BDL) About an hour up I-91

Does the airport change how I book a car?

The ride is planned the same way for all three. When you book, tell us:

  1. Airline, flight number and terminal, so we track the flight and head to the right curb.
  2. Passengers and bags. That decides the vehicle: an executive sedan (up to 4), an Escalade or Suburban SUV (up to 6), or a Sprinter van (up to 13–14) for groups.
  3. Your flight time, so we can suggest a pickup with room for bridge traffic.

Tolls are included in your quote, and we track arrivals in real time. For pricing on a specific trip, call (203) 938-0000 or request a quote online.
