HPN vs JFK vs LaGuardia From Connecticut: Which Airport Should You Fly From?

Short answer: If you live in Fairfield County, Westchester County Airport (HPN) in White Plains is usually the shortest and least stressful ride, and it works well when one of its airlines flies where you're going. From New Haven it's still the closest of the three by road (about 54 miles, compared with about 73 to LaGuardia and about 80 to JFK), but HPN has a small route map: five scheduled airlines and mostly domestic destinations. Pick the airport with the right flight first, then plan the ride. Absolute drives Connecticut travelers to HPN and is authorized for HPN pickups. How far is HPN from your Connecticut town?

These are approximate one-way road miles from OpenStreetMap routing. Yale's travel office publishes the New Haven to LaGuardia and JFK mileage, and the HPN number uses the same measure.

From To HPN To LaGuardia To JFK
New Haven about 54 miles about 73 miles about 80 miles
Bridgeport about 34 miles not compared here not compared here
Stamford about 13 miles not compared here not compared here
Greenwich about 7 miles not compared here not compared here
Danbury about 35 miles not compared here not compared here

Miles are only half the story. The ride to HPN stays on the Connecticut and Westchester side of the line, while LaGuardia and JFK mean crossing into Queens over a bridge, so Bronx and bridge traffic decide how long those rides really take.

What HPN does well

  • It's a regional airport. There is a single main terminal with a parking garage directly across from it, so it is generally a simpler trip than the big New York airports.
  • It never closes. Westchester County's airport site says the main terminal is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including in bad weather, although airlines can still cancel flights.
  • It's close to Fairfield County. For Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk and Danbury-area travelers, HPN is often the easiest airport to reach.
  • TSA PreCheck enrollment is offered on site on weekday mornings, which helps frequent flyers.

What HPN does not do

HPN is a regional airport. The county's airline page says it is served by five scheduled passenger airlines: American, BermudAir, Breeze, Delta and JetBlue. Destinations include Charlotte, Chicago, Washington Reagan, Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul and a mix of Florida and Southeast cities, with Bermuda as the only overseas listing. Routes change by season, so check the current list on the Westchester County Airport airline page before you book.

If you need a long-haul or international flight, a West Coast nonstop, or a specific airline that HPN doesn't serve, you're looking at JFK or another airport. For help choosing between the New York airports, see JFK vs LaGuardia vs Newark from Connecticut.

Quick decision guide

Your trip Usually best from Fairfield County or New Haven Why
A route one of HPN's airlines flies nonstop HPN Shortest ride, small terminal, easy curb
Domestic trip HPN doesn't serve, within about 1,500 miles LaGuardia More airlines; the Port Authority perimeter rule limits most LaGuardia nonstops to about 1,500 miles
International or long-haul nonstop JFK Largest New York gateway
New Haven flyer on Breeze or Avelo from the local airport Tweed New Haven (HVN) Minutes from home if your route is served
Hartford-area flyer who wants to skip New York traffic Bradley (BDL) A straight run up I-91

Do you need a car service at HPN, or can you drive?

HPN has a parking garage directly across from the terminal and an outdoor overflow lot during busy periods. If you're gone for a few days and you're comfortable with I-95 and I-287, driving is straightforward. A car service tends to win when:

  • You have an early flight. Pickups don't depend on a ride-share driver accepting at 4 AM.
  • You're traveling as a family or group. One vehicle, one pickup, one set of bags.
  • You land late. Absolute tracks your flight, so your chauffeur adjusts if you arrive early or late.
  • You'd rather not park. Curb space in front of the HPN terminal is limited, and the airport says standing vehicles are ticketed and unattended vehicles are towed. A chauffeur keeps the vehicle moving and meets you without you parking at all.

Who is allowed to pick you up at HPN?

This is the question most travelers don't think to ask. Westchester County's airport page says arriving passengers should arrange transportation with a company licensed by the Westchester County Taxi & Limousine Commission, or a taxi service licensed in Harrison, North Castle, Rye Brook or White Plains. Companies authorized elsewhere in Westchester or its municipalities may drop passengers at the main terminal. Before you book any ride for an HPN arrival, ask the company whether it is authorized for HPN pickups. Absolute is.

What to tell us when you book

  1. Airline, flight number and terminal, so we can track the flight.
  2. Passengers and bags. That decides the vehicle: an executive sedan (up to 4), an Escalade or Suburban SUV (up to 6), or a Sprinter van (up to 13–14) for groups. For help matching luggage to a vehicle, see how much luggage fits in a sedan, SUV or van.
  3. Your flight time, so we can suggest a pickup time with room for traffic on I-95, the Merritt Parkway and I-287.

Tolls are included in your quote, and a gratuity is applied to bookings. We don't publish prices on our website, so call for a quote. To compare quotes between companies, use our airport quote checklist.

How early should you leave for HPN?

Westchester County recommends arriving two hours before your scheduled departure. Add the drive from your town, and more if you're leaving during weekday rush hour or on a holiday weekend. Your chauffeur will suggest a pickup time based on your town, flight time and day of the week.
