How to Get From New Haven to Boston Logan Without Driving
Short answer: From New Haven and most of Connecticut there are four ways to get to Boston Logan (BOS): drive and park, take Amtrak to Boston and finish on the Silver Line or Logan Express, take an intercity bus, or book a private car service from your door to the terminal curb. Public transit works well for one traveler with a carry-on and a flexible schedule. With an early flight, a family, a lot of luggage or a late-night return, a private car usually removes the risk because there are no transfers. The four options compared
| Option | How it works | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drive and park | Interstate drive to Boston (I-91 and I-84 to the Mass Pike, or I-95 through Providence), then park at Logan or off-airport | People who don't mind the drive and parking | Boston traffic, tunnel delays, long-term parking, and driving home tired after a late landing |
| Amtrak + Silver Line or Logan Express | Northeast Regional or Acela from New Haven Union Station to Boston, then a short airport connection | Solo travelers with light bags and a flexible schedule | Two or three transfers with luggage, and early flights that leave before the first useful train |
| Intercity bus | Bus from New Haven Union Station toward Boston; some itineraries connect to Logan | Budget-minded solo travelers | Many trips end at South Station or need a transfer, and highway traffic can stretch the ride |
| Private car service (Absolute) | Pickup at home, office or hotel; drop-off at your terminal's departures curb | Early flights, families, groups, business travelers, lots of luggage | Book ahead for holiday weekends and pre-dawn departures |
Option 1: Driving and parking
Driving gives you control, but Logan is a long interstate drive from most of Connecticut, and the last stretch runs through Boston traffic and the airport tunnels. You also need to count parking, the shuttle or walk from the garage, and the drive back home after you land, which is often late at night after a long flight.
Option 2: Amtrak to Boston, then the Silver Line or Logan Express
This is the most popular transit route from the New Haven area.
- Train to Boston. Amtrak's Northeast Regional and Acela run from New Haven Union Station to Boston's Back Bay and South Station.
- From South Station: the MBTA Silver Line SL1 bus runs between South Station and every Logan terminal. The MBTA says rides from Logan toward the city are always free, and transfers from the Red Line to the SL1 toward the airport are free too.
- From Back Bay: Massport's Logan Express Back Bay bus stops on Dartmouth Street across from Back Bay Station. Massport lists departures toward Logan every half hour from 5 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, and the ride from the airport back to Back Bay is free.
It works, but you'll handle your bags on and off a train and a bus, and very early flights may leave before the first convenient train gets you there. Check current schedules with Amtrak, the MBTA and Massport before you go.
Option 3: Intercity bus
Buses leave from New Haven Union Station toward Boston. Most go to South Station, and trips that reach Logan often involve a transfer. Peter Pan notes that its Logan stops cover Terminals A, B, C and E, that the time on your ticket refers to Terminal A, and that it can take 15 to 20 minutes to reach every terminal. Leave extra time if your airline flies from a later stop.
Option 4: Private car service
A chauffeur picks you up at your door and drops you at your airline's departures curb, with no transfers and no parking. This is usually the easiest choice when:
- Your flight is early. Pre-dawn pickups don't depend on train or bus timetables.
- You're traveling as a family or group. Everyone rides together in one vehicle, and you only load the bags once.
- You have a lot of luggage. Tell us your bag count so we can match the vehicle. See how much luggage fits in a sedan, SUV or van.
- You land late. We track your flight, so your pickup time moves if you land early or late, and you're not facing a long drive home after a tiring trip.
Absolute's fleet includes a Lincoln Aviator (up to 4 passengers), a Cadillac Escalade or Chevy Suburban (up to 6), a stretch limousine (up to 8) and Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit vans (up to 13) for teams and larger groups. Tolls are included in your quote, and a gratuity is applied to bookings. Ask for a quote; we don't publish prices on the site.
How early should you leave Connecticut for Logan?
Plan to reach the terminal about 2 hours before a domestic flight and about 3 hours before an international one, then add the drive. From the New Haven area, the trip to Logan is long and traffic-sensitive, especially on weekday afternoons, Friday evenings and holiday weekends. Your chauffeur will suggest a pickup time based on your town, flight time and day of the week.
Should you fly from Logan at all?
Sometimes a closer airport is the better call. Bradley (BDL) near Hartford and Tweed (HVN) in New Haven are much shorter rides for many travelers, and the New York airports have more nonstop choices for some routes. Compare them here:
Logan often wins when it has the nonstop, the airline or the international flight you want.
